We are a Somerset firm. Our base is in Cannington near Bridgwater, and we test and inspect electrics across the county, from the coast at Burnham and Weston through Bridgwater and Taunton and out to the villages in between. An EICR, or Electrical Installation Condition Report, is a full test of the fixed wiring in a property. It is what landlords need by law, what businesses need for their insurers and what a lot of homeowners have never had done. We are NAPIT registered with over eighteen years of testing behind us.
A lot of Somerset housing is old, and much of it is rural. Stone cottages, converted farm buildings, barn conversions and village houses that have been extended over generations. Rural properties often sit at the end of long supply runs, sometimes with outbuildings, workshops and stables wired in over the years by different hands. That mix is exactly where testing earns its money, because nobody has a full picture of what is connected to what. A report gives you one.
We inspect and test the whole fixed installation: consumer unit, circuits, sockets, switches, earthing and bonding. Each circuit is tested rather than simply inspected, which is what separates a real EICR from a walk round with a torch. Findings are coded. C1 means danger is present and needs immediate attention. C2 means potentially dangerous. C3 is a recommendation for improvement. FI means further investigation is needed. We talk you through the report so you know what must be done and what is optional.
Every rented home in England needs an EICR at least every five years, and the tenant needs a copy. Somerset landlords often hold property across several towns, and we can test a portfolio on one schedule rather than one call at a time. Anything coded C1 or C2 has to be put right within twenty eight days. We quote for remedial work separately and you are never obliged to use us for it.
Agricultural and rural commercial premises are their own job. Outbuildings, three phase supplies, workshops and equipment sheds all need testing, and the environment is harder on an installation than a house ever is. Dust, damp, livestock and machinery all take their toll. We test rural premises regularly and we know what tends to go wrong in them.
How far across Somerset do you travel?
We cover the county from our base near Bridgwater, and we regularly work in Taunton, Weston-super-Mare, Burnham-on-Sea, Highbridge, Wellington, Minehead, Yeovil and the villages around them. For places further out we book the work in rather than promising same day, and we will always tell you honestly when we can get to you.
Do older stone and rural properties cost more to test?
Sometimes, because they usually take longer. Older buildings tend to have more circuits added over the years, more outbuildings and harder access. We price on the size of the installation, and we will tell you if we think a property is likely to take extra time before we start.
What if the report finds problems?
That is what it is for. The report lists what was found with a code against each item. Anything coded C1 or C2 needs putting right. We give you a separate quote for that work, and you are free to get other prices or use your own electrician.
If you are a landlord with certificates coming up for renewal, a homeowner in an older property or a business that needs its fixed wiring tested, we can help. Call us with the address and the property type and we will give you a price and a date. Every inspection is carried out and signed off by a NAPIT registered electrician, and you get the full report rather than a one line summary.
